The Widespread Negative Impacts of Microplastics in Marine Environments

Although manufactured as a cheap global convenience which has benefited many corporations and consumers, microplastics are an emerging concern that are contaminating the world’s oceans on a huge scale. Most of these contaminants are found in China (Wu et. al, 2018). Large-scale production of plastics began since the 1950’s, which caused an increasing proportion of solid waste in the ocean (GESAMP, 2019). Either purposefully manufactured to carry out specific functions or the result of fragmentation of large plastic pieces in the ocean, they report that microplastics are essentially almost-spherical plastic marine litter that are less than 5mm in diameter. This essay will discuss the widespread negative impacts of microplastics in marine environments on seafood security and marine health, which in turn affect the national economy. This paper will also discuss both political and innovative solutions to mitigate the issue of microplastics in China seas.
