Essay response to Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood Grade awarded: B+ Description: This historical fiction analysis essay is centered on the work of famed graphic novelist, Marjane Satrapi, titled Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood. The visual comic is based on her actual experience of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War. Satrapi, who currently resides in France, was inspired by French cartoonists in the L’Association comics publishing collective, with whom she happened to share a studio with, to share her personal story, in visual form, of growing up in Iran during its most tumultuous years in recent history. Satrapi presents Persepolis as a “visual chronicle of [her] childhood rooted in and articulated through momentous – and traumatic – historical events.” Through its visual and verbal form, from the point of view of an individual, it is able to contest and recollect both macro and micro moments in history.
