This model essay argues that prisons are effective in addressing the problem of crime only if certain criteria is met. Prisons are only effective in deterring crime if they can address the underlying reasons of crime, if enough money is allocated to providing inmates with counseling and preparing them for life outside of prison, and if they can stop the growth of criminal networks. This is due to the fact that their efficiency should be assessed in terms of their capacity to prevent crime from occurring over the long run. Prisons will be able to prevent crime for good if they provide the necessary assistance for offenders who have shown the potential to turn a new leaf.
