Thesis on essay question - Assess the significance of the Cold War on the domestic stability of the independent Southeast Asian states. While the Cold War had provided the stability via aid (both economic and military) that gave rise to domestic stability of states such as Thailand and Indonesia, however, there were also countries where the Cold War had given rise to domestic instability, such as Vietnam. Furthermore, it must be noted that the presence of the Cold War was merely a contributing factor towards domestic stability, but that the role of leaders was the most significant aspect that gave rise to domestic stability, as their actions have served to enable them to deal with centrifugal threats within the country, as well as their abilities to make use of modified political structures to provide the conditions for stability within Southeast Asian States.
