Introduction to Language, Describe the hierarchical nature of language. - Each language has its own meaningful set of sounds. - A sentence is broken down “hierarchy”. Sentence - phrase - word - morpheme - phoneme. - Phoneme - means sounds (single unit of sound that changes sound) (don't need to know this) - Morpheme - smallest language unit. Two ways to think about them = (unbound/free morphine words) (Bound morphemes Affixes, Suffixes). Eg. Dishonest “Dis” is the Morpheme. Dogs “s” is the morpheme. - Morpheme Unbound and Bound can be broken up between “content” and “function”. - “Content” carries the meaning of the sentence. - Semantic processing relies on content words. - “Function” words help understand the relationship between content words, hold sentences together.
