The Bridging of Gender Gaps in Unpaid Domestic Labour Accelerated by the Coronavirus Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic will definitely push for deeper conversations with regards to gender norms and inequalities in households, as the sudden circumstances the world has been thrown into could contribute in recalibrating gender roles. The division of unpaid household labour will surely be more equal as the impacts of the lockdown will create ripple effects amongst society. Firstly, the lockdown allows men to become more accustomed to unpaid home labour. In turn, this will erode social norms and speed up evolution towards gender equality. Secondly, womens’ heightened awareness of unequal household labor would spur conversation and create a societal shift towards minimizing the gender gap. Lastly, the eradication of work cultures and in turn, corporate glass ceilings women face, will have a lasting egalitarian-esque impact on not only unpaid labour but in the workforce as well. With the pandemic disrupting routines in the most structural and instant way, the phenomenon could act as a global experiment against traditional gender roles.
