The theme of gender in Shakespeare is at the forefront of Macbeth, most notably through its titular character, Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth. Shakespeare examines gender in the play through an inversion of the roles and stereotypes associated with both genders. Power is brought into the equation as the ties between gender and power are established when the implications of gender on power through Macbeth’s quest for Kingship and his eventual downfall are considered. In this essay, I will argue that while Shakespeare questions the notions of gender in Macbeth, power ultimately remains with those who are biologically male.
