Infiltration is the process where the flow of water into the ground through the soil surface. It is commonly used in both hydrology and soil sciences. The intensity of this process is called the infiltration rate. The infiltration rate is defined as the volume of the water flow into the ground per unit of time. When rainfall occurs, precipitation moves downwards through the surface of Earth and replenishes soil moisture, recharges aquifers and ultimately supports stream flows during dry periods.
