In highways, railways, and etc, the curve are provided for the gradual change in direction . They enable moving vehicles to move from one path to another when two paths meets at an angle. The purpose of the curves is to deflect the road through the angle between the two straights angle for the safety of passengers. In this practical, we will observe on how to get deflection angles in order to create a curve. There are two types of curves which are vertical and horizontal curves. Vertical curves and Horizontal Curves are provided in the vertical plane and horizontal plane respectively, to obtain gradual changes in directions and grade respectively. Under Horizontal curve there are circular curve and transition curve. Circular curve consists of simple curve, compound curve, and reverse curve. The simple curve is an arc or a circle, and the radius determines the sharpness or flatness of the curve. Furthermore, the compound curves are two curves curving in same direction and eventually joined together. Moreover, reverse curves are 2 curves joined together and eventually curves in opposite directions. The transition curves provide transition from tangent to a simple curve, or between simple curves in compound curves. Next, under vertical curves there are summit curves and valley curves. The summit curve are vertical curves with upward gradient and the valley curve are vertical curves with a downward convexity.
