Chlorine( Cl ) , Bromine (Br) are iodine (I) are the element in Group 17. These elements are known as halogens. Halogens are very reactive elements and most of them exist naturally as halides salts ( Tan Yin Toon, 2007). All halogens exist as diatomic covalent molecules with molecular formulae of F2 , Cl2 , Br2 , I2 and At2 . Some general physical properties of halogens are as follows. All Group 17 elements are insulators of heat and electricity . Moreover, the colour of the halogens becomes darker down the group. For example , chlorine is a yellowish green gas , bromine is a dark brown liquid and iodine is a purplish black solid. Halogens are Group VII elements (p-block) and they are reactive non-metals with oxidizing properties ( Tan Yin Toon, 2007). The electronegativity of halogens decrease when going down the group. This is due to the reason that, the number of shells occupied with electron in the atoms of halogens increase when going down the group. This causes the outermost occupied shell to become further away from the nucleus. Hence , the strength of the nucleus to attract electrons becomes weaker. In this experiment, the electronegativity of several Halogens will be determined through attempted chemical reactions. two molecules will be mixed and the more electronegative one will form a halogen and the lesser electronegative will become a halid
