The experiment is conducted to observe and understand the action of a shear load in a beam. The shear force at a particular section (x-x section) is determined and compared with the theoretical calculation as well. Besides, the shear force at a normal section of loaded beam is measured and checked its agreement with theory. The apparatus and equipment required in the experiment are overhang spring balance, underslung spring balance, left and right hand support, left and right part beam, three hangers, weight and a metre rule. First of all, the weights are hung at different hangers that have been placed at different positions on the beam. This will make both sections of the beam to bend. The beams are then realigned back to horizontal level and the readings of the overhang and underslung spring balance are measured. The procedures are repeated with few sets of weight configuration. The theoretical value of the shear force is calculated and compared with the calculated experimental value with the use of ratio. From the result obtained, it can be concluded that the theory of shear force in beams is valid. However, some errors might have occurred in the experiment and improvements are recommended.
