Benzene is a chemical substance that has the molecular formula C6H6. It is mostly utilized as an intermediary in the synthesis of various compounds, most notably ethylbenzene, cumene, cyclohexane, nitrobenzene, and alkylbenzene. More than half of all benzene produced is converted into ethylbenzene, a precursor to styrene, which is used to manufacture polymers and plastics such as polystyrene and EPS. Approximately 20% of benzene synthesis is utilized to make cumene, which is required to produce phenol and acetone for resins and adhesives. Cyclohexane accounts for around 10% of global benzene production; it is largely utilized in the manufacturing of nylon fibres, which are then processed into textiles and industrial plastics. Some rubbers, lubricants, dyes, detergents, medicines, explosives, and insecticides contain trace quantities of benzene. China was the largest benzene user in 2013, followed by the United States. Benzene production is now increasing in the Middle East and Africa, whereas production in Western Europe and North America is declining.
