Substrate is a molecule acted upon by an enzyme. To increase the rate of reaction of the biological processes in organisms, the enzyme may need to act upon a molecule which known as a substrate. A substrate will be loaded on an active site of the enzyme to proceed the catalyzing process, this process was also known as a lock and key mechanism, which a substrate will only bind with a specific enzyme. As the key describes a substrate while the lock is the figure of an enzyme, therefore in case to bind within each and another by lock and key mechanism, the shape of the substrate must be complementary and match to the active site of the enzyme. In human's body, almost every molecule is acting as a substrate. Thus, to carry on some biological processes or reaction, they may need a large amount of energy and time to complete the whole complete processes and reaction. Therefore, an enzyme is then needed to lower the energy required so that the processes can be carry on faster.
