FREBP Finding evidence assessment. Acute musculoskeletal injuries can be described as injury to either the muscles, joints, ligaments, cartilage or nerves. Musculoskeletal injuries can include conditions such as a strains, sprains, over-use injuries, and soft tissue injuries, and acute cases are defined as lasting less then 3 months. Generally the recovery time is two or three weeks without any form of treatment, however during this timeframe the individual can experience high level of pain (Derry, Moore, Gaskell, Mcintyre & Wiffen, 2015). These injuries are quite common in everyday life, however both the severity and prevalence of these injuries increases with physical activity and exercise. The severity of the musculoskeletal injury is defined by the pain experienced, the inflammation, and the time needed to recover. The cost of the injury does not just impact upon the individual, but also employers and the economy. According to research by Lysaght, Donnelly & Luong (2010), it was believed that one third of work-related time off could be attributed to that of musculoskeletal injuries, and it was estimated that in the United States, between 15-20 billion dollars each year is lost in direct costs of these injuries.
