Literary texts have the power to capture points of cultural change within the time period they were produced. Within the 18th century, a new era of thinkers initiated the Enlightenment period, reflecting advancements in science, a somewhat dangerous pursuit for knowledge and the turning away from nature. The protagonist in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley exemplifies the behaviour of man grasping for more knowledge than he can truly bare as he succeeds in bringing back human life. The thirst for forbidden knowledge is portrayed as beyond what man can essentially handle. The danger of scientific advancements and a subtle warning is also deeply portrayed within the text, linking to the power of nature, and it strongly affects ones downfall or regeneration. Shelly explore’s her attitudes towards the changing culture within her time, criticising the new developments and their affect on human nature.
