Introductory Notes In keeping with the clients current legal statements, the rights and restrictions for the new repository will be formed around the existing policies, in order to maintain consistency. It is important to consult current legislation when forming the statements so that the legislation cited is correctly utilised and cited. The Copyright Act 1968 is the authoritative source for this purpose. As the system uses digitised copies of artefacts and objects, as well the goal to include multiple born-digital objects, the Act definition of what a ‘digitised copy’ and ‘reproduction’ is must be sourced. Under s. 18, ss. 21(1A), a work is deemed to be reproduced if converted into or from a digital or other electronic machine-readable form. Any article that embodies the work in such a form will be deemed as a reproduction (Copyright Act 1968). Collecting institutions such as the ANMM, will host a range of files in online collections, and need the permission of the copyright owner to reproduce digital copies, unless copyright has expired or a special exception applies (Copyright Act 1968).
