The former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s address to the nation in the aftermath of the Lindt Café Siege had several effects on the nature of civic participation in Australia. The speech effected three social groups, including the migrant population, the Islamic community and the younger generation of Australians. The nature of Abbott’s proposed methods of counter terrorism, including data retention laws, will be analysed in order to determine whether they would affect the nature and level of civic participation within Australia.
