LECTURE 1 – THE DYNAMIC BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT ‘Wicked Problems’ – things that not everyone agrees is a problem etc. climate change, poverty. • There are no perfect solutions. • There are the consequence of other wicked problems. • Share economies – producer engaging directly with consumer, not traditional business environments e.g. uber, ebay Consumer decisions – everyone providing a niche product, Subjective Perception – perceptions change over time, p.g. 9 in textbook, competing claims on the same resoucres ‘Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ – sustainability (Our common future WCED) Subjective Sustainability – e.g. Sex tourism, - is a business sustainable because it makes money? Forces us to reconcile money vs contribution to society. Sustainable development is not just industry sustainability. Even the law is socially defined. The environment is stakeholder centred. ‘It’s why were committed to hiring American suppliers and it’s why we’re manufacturing more of our products and components in the United States’ Market Stakeholders – e.g. customers, suppliers Non-market Stakeholders – e.g. communities, governments, media, general public
