In the present day, nations are pressured more than ever to take a proactive, structural and economically beneficial approach to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy. It is difficult for nations to take the first step, as economic policies in this field are very limited in experience, and the implications are widely unknown. The purpose of this paper is to outline the two periods of the Carbon Pricing Scheme, to evaluate its effectiveness in addressing the issue of global warming, and finally to offer recommendations to the opposition party in regards to revising their policy. What is the Carbon Pricing Scheme? The Carbon Pricing Scheme commenced on the 1st July 2012 for the purpose of reducing the release of carbon emissions, and encouraging the research and development into more renewable sources of energy. The Gillard Government’s long term goal is to reduce national emissions by 60% from the year 2000 levels by the year 2050 (Garnaut, pg. 282).
