During travels to Japan, surprisingly, I caught glimpses of elements that ran parallel in both Buddhist temples and Shintō shrines—be it erections of certain deities or plaques of teachings. It is thus of my personal interest to explore more about the origins and teachings of the Shintō faith that is deeply-seeded in Japanese culture. I am also intrigued to find out in particular, the influences of the Buddhist teachings on original Ancient Shintō doctrines. Of course, as one who intends to live in Japan for a prolonged period, I will also be approaching this research essay with an angle extended specifically towards the socio-political impact that Shintō brings.
