STAGE 1 Mathematical Methods “Whirly Bird” Design Investigation

QUADRATICS & POLYNOMIALS task competed in 2019 with an A- grade. As a designer with “Ernest Engineers”, the task was to assess the current “whirly bird” wing design templates. The wing length refers to the distance from the body of the whirly bird to the tip of the wings. Improvements had to be concluded when designing an original whirlybird design to determine the flight times while changing the independent variable, which was the length of the body. The difference between a hypothesis and a conjecture is that a hypothesis is what will be predicted to happen, whereas a conjecture is a statement believed to be true based on observations. The hypothesis was that a longer body will result in the whirly bird having a longer flight time. The two whirly birds were dropped from a consistent height 5 times for each whirly bird, allowing an average time to be concluded for each wing length. The aim of this task was to find the quadratic from its graph, by hand stitching and using a graphics calculator as well as the QUADREG command to calculate the best fit quadratic through a set of points (Pearson.com, 2019)
