Funeral Blues, a rich and beautiful poem written by the eminent English poet W.H. Auden in 1936 is an elegy with four stanzas and the rhyme scheme of AABB, with each stanza containing two rhymed couplets. In this poem, Auden writes on the pain and grief of losing his beloved younger brother. One of the most obvious poetic devices that is extant within this poem is Personification, which is the act of a giving a non-living object human-like characteristics. An exemplification of this device is in the second stanza, where Auden depicts airplanes "moaning overhead and scribbling on the sky." Airplanes are incapable of moaning or scribbling, as it is a human characteristic, but giving an airplane the capability to do so enhances the depth of the poem. Through this poetic technique, Auden is able to demonstrate that that airplane itself is also mourning the death. An additional poetic devices
