Bacteria are single-celled organisms that are capable of growing in diverse environments. They reproduce quickly through binary fission due to their simple cell structure (Science, L. 2018). As such, bacteria can be both harmful and helpful depending on its classification. ‘Pathogen’ is a term used to describe the harmful bacteria that cause disease or illness. S.epidermidis is a nosocomial pathogen found on the human skin especially on the nose, armpit and scalp that can cause various skin infections (Prod.hopkins-abxguide.org, 2018). Consequently, antimicrobial agents are used to inhibiting the growth of pathogens. In this practical, different brands of hand sanitisers including Dettol, Coles-brand, Palmolive, Ego aqium and Purell will be investigated to determine the effectiveness of each antimicrobial agent against S.Epidermidis by calculating the zone of inhibition for every trial.
