BIO IA2. Biodiversity is a measure of the variety and variability of all living things in an ecosystem and their interactions. (Biodiversity, 2023) Greater biodiversity represents greater ability to adapt and a high capacity for an ecosystem to withstand sudden changes in an environment. The Simpson’s diversity Index (SDI) measures the probability that any 2 randomly chosen organisms are different species. (the, 2015) Exhibited below: SDI=1−∑n(n−1)N(N−1) 𝑆 𝐷 𝐼 = 1 − ∑ 𝑛 𝑛 − 1 𝑁 𝑁 − 1 Where N is the total population of all the species in the sample and n is the population of a specific species. The higher the SDI, the more biodiverse an ecosystem. The way abiotic and biotic factors interact is critical to the biodiversity of an ecosystem. Abiotic factors are non-living chemical and physical elements whereas biotic factors are living organisms in the ecosystem. (Abiotic Factors, 2024) Examining the effect of the abiotic factors, soil moisture (SM) and lux, on plant biodiversity in a sclerophyll forest is the purpose of this report. Predominantly, lux (light intensity) and SM affect the growth and abundance of organisms.
