Pompeii and Herculaneum were two ancient Roman towns located near modern-day Naples, Italy. Both cities were destroyed and buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pompeii was a bustling city with a population of around 11,000 people before the eruption. It was a popular destination for wealthy Romans who wanted to escape the crowded city of Rome. The city was filled with grand villas, public buildings, and temples. Herculaneum was a smaller town than Pompeii, with a population of around 4,000 people. It was a popular resort town for wealthy Romans, and many of the buildings were luxurious villas. Today, both Pompeii and Herculaneum are popular tourist attractions. The ruins have been excavated and preserved, providing a glimpse into what life was like in ancient Roman times. Visitors can see the remains of grand villas, public buildings, and even the bodies of the citizens who were killed in the eruption.
