The immediate, long term effects of a conflict and how key individuals have shaped particular events. Grade received: A- Thesis statement: The tactics employed by Hannibal at Trebbia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae demonstrate Hannibal’s ingenious military mind. Rationale: I devised my initial hypothesis after listening to class discussions and by briefly reading sources that describe Hannibal as a military mastermind and the greatest strategist to date. I was intrigued after hearing that he used animals and nature to trick and out smarten the Romans, it seems very odd but interesting. After reading sources from modern historians they all for the most part seem to corroborate and portray Hannibal in a positive light who inherited his incredible tactics from his father, Hamilcar I have discovered that there is conflicting reports between primary sources regarding the Roman and Carthaginian death toll at each battle. Hannibal used his ambush tactics which were very successful during the Battle of Trebbia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae, it was at these three battles that Carthage nearly annihilated Rome, all of which took place during the second Punic Wars. To prove my hypothesis, I have decided to study these three famous engagements. 1. The Battle of Trebbia 2. The Battle of Lake Trasimene 3. The Battle of Cannae 16,800 words
