Feminist Essay
Art is the application or expression of creative skills and imagination, typically portrayed as a
painting or sculpture, producing artworks to be admired mainly for emotional power. Art is
considered highly valued for its values and materiel practice. A group of artists rebelled against
these values and traditional methods, creating a well known art movement “conceptual art”.
Conceptual art originated in the early twentieth century when Marcel Duchamp a dada artist
submitted his artwork to The Society of Independent Artists in New York. Duchamp called his
artwork “fountain” (1917) which was an everyday urinal. The artwork was rejected as it was a
„ready-made‟ object which had no value, the artist did not hand make the work nor was it unique.
The work also wasn‟t met by the standards of art. Marcel Duchamp responded by saying “the
idea of the work matters more than its physical representation”. This lit up conversation in the
art community of “what is an artwork?” conceptual art was against „art‟ critics‟ view on what really
art was and what was accepted to be in an art museum or gallery. The fastest growing
international movement was known to be conceptual art. Artists disagreed about the art
movement and how minimalism overruled their basic and simplicity elements such as colour,
shape, line and more. Conceptual was another successful movement along with cubism, pop art,
dada etc. This broke down the restrictions of art. Artists that supported the movements started to
ignore the skills and aesthetics in art and incorporated feminism, language and culture to their
artworks which had little or no cultural art practices. Artists didn‟t hesitate to take their work out to
the public domain making it more convenient for the audience to explore and vie the artwork,
instead of waiting for approval to show case the artwork in galleries, museums, exhibitions etc.
This took down art traditions by changing people‟s thoughts on what was eligible in art museums
and galleries, it also changed the way critics viewed the works which didn‟t please them.
Conceptualism changed the whole view on art changing and ignoring the traditional boundaries.
