Senior Science - Complete Chemistry Core Topic Notes

Many consumer products have been developed because of increased understanding of chemical substances, chemical reactions and the biochemistry of human body surfaces. Food consists of substances such as simple and complex carbohydrates, protein, fats and oils, vitamins, minerals, water, acids, bases, alcohols, esters and many others. Eg. Milk is a mixture of water, fats and vitamins Substances that are commonly used for entertainment include cosmetics such as lipstick and eye pencils, which are used on the skin. Substances, such as ethanol, the alcohol that occurs in a wide variety of drinks, are ingested and tobacco, a mixture of substances including nicotine, is inhaled. Substances that are used for body hygiene purposes such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, cleansing creams and lotions, are mixtures of chemicals like glycerol, fats and oils, salts and water. Many substances are used to help maintain health including those that are commonly used for body hygiene. Substances that assist in maintaining a hygienic environment such as household cleaners and pesticides may be mixtures or compounds and often contain methylated spirits, sodium hydroxide and salts. Surfactant Chemicals  Name often given to detergents as it is the main ingredient in cleaning products  Synthetic chemicals which helps make water ‘wetter’ thereby enabling it to wet a dirty surface and lift dirt from it. They have a hydrophilllic and hydrophobic end.  Common surfactant chemicals include washing powders, washing up detergents and surface cleaning products Degreasers  Dissolves oils, fats and greases which are not soluble in water  Contains non-polar solvents hence is able to clean oil and grease off machinery
