▪ Discuss the structure of the Rutherford model of the atom, the existence of the nucleus and electron orbits. o In 1911, Ernest Rutherford, or more precisely his students Geiger and Marsden, set out to perform an experiment that aimed to verify Thomson’s model of the atom, using the newly discovered alpha particles. o Thomson’s model shoed electrons only occupying a very small space and the rest of the atom occupied with very low density positive charge. o Rutherford thought that if this was the case, if alpha particles were fired at these atoms, they should either go straight through or through with very minimal deflections because nothing was in their way. o The above diagram shows his experimental setup.
