The Containment Policy introduced, initially under Truman and furthered by Eisenhower, played a major part in ‘institutionalising’ the Cold War, as the Americans attempted to stop the flow of communism. Whilst the Cold War was based upon fears and perturbations pertaining between the angst stemming from the conflicting ideologies between the Capitalist and Communist systems, containment made the Cold War more tangible. The revival of the arms race, pactomania, economic muscle and the creation of espionage units such as the CIA, further strained tensions which existed between the two blocs. The containment policy ultimately gave rise to oscillatory aggression, and this became the premise of the Cold War, threatening to become a ‘hot war’ over conflicts such as the Korean War and Cuban Missile Crisis, which were a consequence of the Containment Policy.
