His early concerns were the consolidation of Nazi power and the removal of opposition. • Policy of coordination (Gleichschaltung) attempted to bring all aspects of private and public life under Nazi control. • Once he had established control, Hitler’s major concern became foreign policy. Hitler was a political character renowned for his promise to rescue the German people from the shame of defeat in WWI and the restrictions imposed on the treaty of Versailles. • Hitler’s ultimate aim was to establish a Lebensraum [German empire in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union]. • Hitler’s ideas were applauded by German military leaders because they involved the expansion of the armed forces.
