Nazi Germany 1933 -1934 Hitler’s ambitions from the beginning of his political career went beyond simply obtaining power and holding on to it. Although this was important, it could be suggested that his real long-term aims were to undo the hated Treaty of Versailles, restore Germany’s position in Europe and gain ‘lebensraum’(‘living space’) in eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Due to the failure of the Weimar Republic, Germany was once again sent into a state of economic instability and discontent, intensified by the Treaty of Versailles and the Wall Street Crash. Up until this point in time, the Nazi party had been essentially unpopular, however, German citizens were desperate for a change and the only way to obtain that change was to elect a new government. The Nazis celebrated long into the night on the 30th of January 1933, but it would be wrong to date Hitler’s complete power from this moment. He was part of a cabinet dominated by his opponents, yet, it was a combination of luck, manipulation of legal procedures and violence that explains how Hitler and the Nazis effortlessly consolidated their power by August 1934.
