The government, courts and other statutory bodies are constantly reviewing legislation to ensure that it meets the expectations of the community and is as relevant as possible to our rapidly developing and changing society. Criminal Law Criminal law is the area of law that deals with crime. It has a number of important characteristics that distinguish it from other ares of law: • CL = concerned with the protection of society. A crime is an offence against society as a whole, and one which is punishable by the state. • Criminal actions can include crimes against a person, the state and/or property. • The police and/or the Director of Public Prosecutions decide to prosecute the offender in court. • The Crown must prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.
