The meaning of crime - A crime includes any act or omission that results in harm to society at large and is punishable by the state. - Criminal law is concerned with the conduct of people that is forbidden by society. The community will then seek to punish any person who breaks the criminal law; it will not be left to the victim Elements of crime Actus Reus: guilty act. The physical act of carrying out the crime. Not only must the prosecution prove intent, it must also prove the wrongful act. Mens Rea: guilty mind. Refers to the mental state of the convicted. In a murder case the prosecution must prove that the accused person intended to kill or cause serious injury. If they fail to do this there will be no conviction. Causation: The ink between the behaviour of the accused and the result
