Successful project managers possess: - - - - - Excellent communication and planning skills Motivates the team, Negotiate with stakeholders Resolve conflict Ensures the project progresses within budget and time constraints Communication Skills Each individual must find a mix that suits their personality but also elicits the maximum performance from each team member. (strategies adjusted to their style in response to feedback) Eg. Large lecture style meetings stifle feedback from participants, whereas smaller round table sessions encourage feedback Active listening Listening to other people is the main source of critical info required Attention and involvement are required “fake” listening: disregarding what they’re saying even though we maintain eye contact and give response (oh yeah, I see) - - - - - We tend to focus on the message we wish to deliver rather than understanding messages we receive Mirroring - - - Repeating back some of the speaker’s key words- indicates that you are interested Allows the speaker to reflect on the appropriateness and accuracy of their message Speaker: I doubt we’ll be able to finish by Friday Listener: You think we won’t be able to finish by Friday? Project manager (listener) did not make a judgement- confirmed and encouraged further information.
