A Study In Scarlet – Essay

Intro: A study in Scarlet written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is an example of the few texts that are products of the cultures which they emerge. In the text A.C. Doyle uses the issues of the Victorian era to make this novel applicable and appealing to the people of his time period. Ideology and moralities of the Victorian era suggested that those of lower classes were seen as less respectable than those of the middle class. The three values that are going to be explored throughout this paper are gender roles, justice and social class. During the Victorian era gender roles were certain social expectations that the separate genders were expected to adhere to, like how a woman’s purpose was for pro-creation and homemaking. The lack of freedom, expecting to be chaperoned most certainly would’ve made the women go mad. Justice attempted society to solve its social problems in its justice system by making punishments. A character in the novel operated murders outside the law, by the exception of having a high regard for justice. And finally the quality of life depended on a structured social class that was divided into three sectors: the upper, middle and working/lower class. Unmarried women usually stayed at home and received an inheritance upon their parent’s death. The upper class and the working class weren’t supposed to be together, as they were from completely different worlds.
