Texts are a Product of Their Time and Place
English (Advanced)
5 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
Texts are a product of their time and place as political and social influences, impact the way authors shape their texts. George Orwell’s 1945 allegorical novel Animal Farm and Bruce Miller’s 2017, Episode 1 of Hulu’s series The Handmaids Tale are both product of their time. Animal Farm warns readers of the dangers of totalitarianism and how power can be a corruptive force and form a social class hierarchy. Taking inspiration off of the Russian Revolution, 1917, Orwell’s novel critiques Joseph Stalin’s communist government. Much alike, Miller’s The Handmaids Tale, based off of Margert Atwood’s novel The Handmaids Tale, warns the audience of the dangers of power, often creating a dangerous social class hierarchy. The series criticises todays contemporary society, giving insight to the abuse, oppression and subjugation of women. The episode explores the idea of what is to be human, bringing extreme religious ideas upon the lower class, separating the lower and upper class by dehumanising many individuals. Both texts warn readers, exploring the dangers of totalitarianism and social class hierarchy.
