Q: To what extent has your personal response to the speeches been shaped by the enduring power of their intellectual and artistic qualities? Support your evaluation with a close analysis of the Sadat extract and one other speech. Great speeches have always provoked powerful personal responses in their audiences through their intellectual qualities, presenting well thought alternatives to existing political and social realities. Reinforced by their artistic rhetorical qualities, they have been able to raise awareness about their cause and inspire many to work towards a better future. This is certainly true for Statement to the Knesset by Anwar Sadat and Keynote Address by Aung San Suu Kyi, which despite differing contexts share the same themes of moral leadership and tolerance. Contextually, Sadat sought to foster the Middle East peace process between the Arab nations and Israel, whilst Suu Kyi promoted women as decision makers in a democratic Burma free of its ruling military junta. Altogether, both speeches reveal the power of the spoken word and its artistic and intellectual qualities to empower change...
