Discoveries in any form are transformative experiences, shaping our identity and understandings; fundamentally reshaping one’s perceptions of themselves and the wider society. This is the case in “The Motorcycle Diaries” by Ernesto Che Guevera and “This lime tree bower my prison” by Samuel Coleridge. The memoir details the humanitarian journey of Guevara and Alberto Granado on a defective motorcycle across Latin America. It centres around how Guevara’s experiences in different places allow him to discover his revolutionary willingness to fight against social and political injustice. Whilst the poem portrays the realisation of an immobile persona who, through imagination, journeys across the landscape and discovers how being trapped under a lime tree allows him to discover God through nature. Although both texts focus on different types of discoveries, they both illustrate how such discoveries allow the persona to transform and change and gain renewed understanding. Like Che, Coleridge is also guided by nature in his discoveries enabling him to draw on his experiences in such a way that moulds his very sense of self and understanding of others.
