Burdened by the weight of exacting revenge for his father’s murder he is impeded by moral and ethical concerns as he contemplates that as an avenger he will be reduced to the level of the avenged. Coupled with this, he battles the dichotomy between Renaissance thinking and providence all of which contribute to his moral dilemma and inner turmoil. Understandably ‘delay’ becomes his modus operandi and we are left to reflect on the impact of life experience on the human condition. The unusual and unforeseen circumstances which arise in one’s life and our response to them are what define the human condition. Hamlet’s situation sees him as metaphorically orphaned, a father murdered and a mother who married her husband’s brother “with such dexterity to incestuous sheets”.
