The human experiences of George Orwell’s 1984 and Kurt Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron profoundly position the audience to recognise the dangers of conformity, and the significance of retaining one’s autonomy and individual identity. Through the texts’ exploration of memory, individuation, and the relationship between human experiences and power, it is shown how absence of self causes one to acquiesce to oppressive institutions. Orwell’s construction of a fundamentally unreliable narrator promotes notions concerning the dangers of collectivism and the importance of maintaining a voice. However, both texts encompass didactic political rhetorics and examine how memory informs identity. With the insights of Orwell’s essay on Politics and the English Language, the reader is encouraged to consider the importance of authenticity in one's language to achieve personal consciousness and a strong voice. Hence, human experiences in 1984 and Harrison Bergeron show the dangers of conformity and the importance of having a voice.
