Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex is the main play within a trilogy following the tragic hero it takes its name from. Sophocles’ retelling of the myth has become the most popular version. However, Athenian audiences had known its story for almost a century before its performance; Sophocles uses this for dramatic irony, dragging out the forensic investigation Oedipus leads, ultimately leading to his own downfall. Discussions of fate and the gods are commonplace throughout the play, specifically if anyone has the ability to avoid prophecy, used to highlight how though humans cannot control their fates, they can control themselves and the quality of their characters. To further relate the text to his audience, Sophocles added aspects to the original story which were not present, such as a great plague that overtook Thebes, similar to one Athens experienced. Sophocles uses these techniques of dramatic irony, his theme of fate versus free will, and period-relevant alterations all work together to bring the myth of Oedipus to life for his Athenian audience.
