Marxism as an intertextual perspective for King Lear
English (Advanced)
3 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
Karl Marx once quoted that “Capital is dead labor, which vampire-like, lives only by sucking labour, and lives the more , the more labor it sucks.” Society today is the generation of capitalism that will only continue to work longer hours and is evident that a correlation is formed in King Lear, a play that promotes features of Marxism. King Lear is a play of two plots that coincide and mimic the same story line of fluctuations in power. It presents feudalist and capitalist run societies and the corruption they hold. Aspects of Marxism relevant in King Lear are behaviour based on power, the exploitation of higher powers and the representation of capitalism. Karl Marx has explicitly addressed and supported these features within his writing which can be also interpreted in King Lear by Shakespeare. In supporting Marxism, appreciation and understanding of King Lear is inevitably enhanced.
