How does society rely on women to make correct choices? It has been posited that ‘Women weave the tapestry of a good societies’. How would society rely on young women to make correct choices? Well, Madame Chapone’s 1773 conduct book ‘Letters of the Improvement of her mind’ and Jane Austen’s 1815 novel ‘Emma’ explores and introduce us to the concept that society relies on young women making correct choices through varying methods of criticizing indecent behaviour as incurring societal repercussion. Through her protagonists’ flurry of ill-informed and naïve behaviour towards and within the Regency period, Austen implores us to recognise their 18th century context as in dire need for kindness, manners and good behaviour among people in power. This is apparent through Austen’s eponymous protagonist Emma described as “a heroine which no one but myself will much like”, who needs to learn to meet her social obligations. Similarly, Madame Chapone’s epistolary text utilises advice to an impressionable niece to emphasize the need for humility, consideration and self-knowledge when engaging with 18th century English society. Through Emma’s overt ignorance towards the behavioural tenets propagated by Chapone, Austin furthers the importance of ingenuity and awareness when interacting within her hierarchical and traditional setting.
