Part of the Clean Energy Future package, the carbon tax is proposed to reduce Australia’s emissions of carbon and contribute to global efforts to address climate change. Climate change refers to a range of environmental consequences including higher temperatures, rising sea levels, and increased occurrences of natural disasters. Humans contribute to climate change through the emission of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, from activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have forecast that carbon emissions will rise by 1.9% per year and that temperatures will rise by 1.1-6.4% in the long term.
