Monumental plays challenge audience expectations by pioneering alternative theatrical styles enabling them to challenge social values and issues contrary to traditional theatre, presenting a fabricated version of reality. This is true within Bertolt Brecht’s play Mother Courage and her children (1939) and Moises Kaufman’s The Laramie project (2000), both plays are seen to have revolutionised the conventions of theatre through their unorthodox styles, techniques and objectives. They confront audience’s conventional expectations through alternative dramatic techniques such as verbatim and epic theatre and through this are able to position them to make decisions about the play. Mother Courage’s contradictory nature is highlighted within Brecht’s use of Verfremdungseffekt, specifically song to distance his audience, enabling them to question the motives and reasons behind her decisions, allowing the audience to empathise with reason.
