During the 20th century, theatre was significantly transformed and sought to challenge audiences through the incorporation of ground-breaking, dynamic and powerful theatrical approaches and techniques. Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children (1941) utilised the revolutionary style of Epic Theatre, integrating his Verfremdungseffekt which involved techniques such as song, placards and symbolic character directly in opposition to Naturalism in order to teach audiences to criticise the injustices and inequalities of life- indirectly representing the political consequences of the age and its social conditions.
