Solid notes for the first topic of the PRELIM course in YEAR 11. e.g. Particle Theory: used to explain different physical states of matter and its properties. It was first proposed by Democritus. The arrangement of the particles in the different states is used to explain their properties. “All matter is made up of tiny particles that are continually moving.” Elements – pure substances which cannot be broken down into simpler substances by any means. The simplest type of substances They are made up of the same type of atoms. Compounds – pure substances which can be decomposed into simpler substances (elements or simpler compounds) by chemical means. Compounds consist of TWO or MORE elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio by mass. Properties vary from the properties of constituent elements. NB: molecule is chemical unit that is capable of independent existence....... etc
