HSC Biology In depth Case Study of Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis Abstract The following case study is that of a native Cape Town man, aged 59 years, presented to hospital with fevers and rashes. The patient was subsequently examined and diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis as a secondary to pulmonary Tuberculosis. The patient was subject to treatment, which was mostly successful. This case is notable in providing an exceptional example of an affected individual, an aged man suffering from HLH, a hematologic disorder that generally affects young children. This instance also allowed to experiment with more passive treatments (such as targeting the TB itself rather than drastic surgical or medical procedures) due to the patient’s matured and developed immune and metabolic systems, consequently allowing for a study as to how these were maintained after the HLH has subsided. However, there are more notable and groundbreaking cases of HLH that are more insightful to the nature of the disease and its treatment, with this one noteworthy due to its rarity
