Blueprint of Life Notes
5.3 Discuss the potential impact of the use of reproduction technologies on the genetic diversity of
species using a named plant and animal example that have been genetically altered.
- The use of reproduction technologies has allowed humans to create organisms with particular
characteristics that are desirable for both production and cosmetic purposes. However, this has affected
the genetic diversity of species by restricting it as the genetically altered individuals are the only ones
reproduced to pass their characteristics. In other words, species cannot undergo variation as often as
their characteristics are controlled by humans, who have organisms produce offspring with the same
desirable traits as them.
- This is also harmful as the eradication of the species become more likely without variation. If a species
with desirable traits is the only one reproduced, threats to this species are more likely to kill it as there
will be no longer be individuals with variations that can resist the threat.
- On the other hand, the use of reproductive technologies and transgenics has the potential to increase
genetic diversity as we are able to create new species with different characteristics. Through genetic
species, we are also able to create variation faster than natural means. For example, crops such as rice
have been genetically engineered to be resistant to herbicides and pesticides used in different climates
and topography.
